Brimson Grow Library FAQs -- Connecting to Databases

> Can I access the library databases from my home or office?

All the library databases listed on the library web site are available whether you are doing your research on campus or off campus. When you try to connect to a database from off campus, you may be asked for your Library ID -- you will need the 14-digit barcode from your library card.

Note that connecting to the Christian Periodical Index (CPI) will require a special login -- click here for more information about how to connect to CPI from off campus.

> What happened to the "Connect From Off Campus" page?

There used to be a special process for connecting to the library databases from off campus. Starting in the Fall of 2005, though, that changed, and now the connection process dynamically determines if you are connecting from on campus or off. If you are connecting from off campus, you will be prompted for your Library ID -- the 14-digit barcode from your library card.

So there no longer is a special web page for connecting from off campus -- just click on the links on main library home page, and you will be able to login even if you are connecting from off campus. The only exception to this is the Christian Periodical Index (CPI) -- click here for more information about how to connect to CPI from off campus.

> I can't connect from off campus -- how do I fix it?

The two most common reasons for connections failing are either if your browser's privacy settings are too high or if you are connecting through a firewall. A third possibility is that your library account has expired -- call the front desk at (630)620-2104 to check on the status of your library account or email us at library@seminary.edu.

Note that off campus connections to the library databases -- except Christian Periodical Index (see above) -- are handled by the server at ilcso.illinois.edu.

Adjusting Browser Privacy Settings:
In Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher, click on Tools --> Internet Options --> Privacy. Click on the "Sites" button, type "http://ilcso.illinois.edu" (without the quotes) in the Address field and then click on "Allow". Click on "OK" twice to close the Internet Options window.

You can also experiment with reducing the overall privacy settings by moving the slider on the Privacy tab to a lower level. If you do this, it is recommended that you move the slider back up to the original setting once you are finished searching the library databases.

Firewall Settings for Norton Internet Security:
In Norton Internet Security, the ad blocking settings can prevent remote authentication to the library databases. The following steps can allow you to connect to library databases without completely disabling Norton Internet Security. There are also settings similar to these in other popular firewall programs:

  • Double-click on the Norton Internet Security icon in the lower right hand corner of your taskbar tray.
  • Once the Internet Security program opens, click on the Norton Anti Spam tab on the left.
  • Click on the link to ad blocking and then click on Configure.
  • Click on the Advanced button and then click on the Add Site button.
  • Add "ilcso.illinois.edu" (without the quotes) to the list of domains. You may have to delete "www" from the start of the URL if Norton automatically pastes it in for you.
  • Once you have added ilcso.illinois.edu to the domains listed in the Web Contents Options window, find it in the list and click once on ilcso.illinois.edu in order to highlight it.
  • Edit the settings for ilcso.illinois.edu to allow everything and block nothing.

If you have problems printing from FirstSearch databases, you may need to repeat the above steps in order to add newfirstsearch.oclc.org to the list of domains and prevent Norton Internet Security from blocking communications with FirstSearch databases.
