Background
Rev. Dr. Michael Quicke has extensive experience in preaching and academic life. Born in London, England, he was educated at both Cambridge and Oxford Universities before beginning twenty-one years of Baptist ministry in Britain. His key ministry was in Cambridge at the historic City Centre Church, where morning congregations grew from 70 to over 500. The vision of the church involved the development of a mission center, open seven days a week, through which 4000 people passed each week. He was also a Baptist chaplain to the University, where he interacted with both students and academics. His reputation as a Christian communicator grew as he appeared on television and radio and spoke at conferences, conventions and assemblies throughout Britain, Australia, Canada and the USA.
Prior to his appointment as the Charles W. Koller Professor of Preaching and Communication, Dr. Quicke was Principal of Spurgeon's College, London, the largest Baptist seminary in Europe. For seven years, he was responsible for the oversight of the seminary. Several important themes in his life came together while at Spurgeon's: love of students, concern for the best of Christian learning and commitment to mission. At Northern, these themes have come together again through the vision of the C. W. Koller Chair. It is my desire to help inspire a new generation of preachers who will set our churches on fire, Dr. Quicke says.
Dr. Quicke will be teaching Principles of Preaching and Practice of Preaching for Masters students and Preaching the Life of Jesus for D. Min. students. He will also be launching a new course in fall 2001 on Basic Communication Skills. His preferred style of teaching is to collaborate with students in the development of their gifts. Those who take his classes will be expected to practice what they preach and preach what they practice. As the author of many articles on preaching, he is committed to the task of equipping preachers to effectively engage our post modern culture. He is currently working on a book which focuses on preaching in the 21st century.
Dr. Quicke is married to Carol and has two grown children, Robert and Simon, who are both married and living in London. Carol has a deep commitment to the pastoral care of students and the modeling of Christian ministry.
