On April 8, 2009, Northern Seminary received a bequest of $3.7 million from William Francis, Jr. During the lunch gathering at which the gift was presented, Northern students, alumni, and faculty shared how Northern has impacted their lives and shaped their calling and ministry. Bill, William's oldest son, shared that he was, "Impressed by the diversity of Northern and its approach to education."

In response to the bequest, the largest single gift Northern has received in its nearly 100-year history, President Alistair Brown remarked, "Northern is a 21st century seminary with a bold mission of training leaders for Christian ministry. Such a gift will strengthen Northern's capacity to develop programs, enhance the student experience, and meet the vital need of scholarships for students."

Ted Rodgers, Chair of the Board of Trustees, recalled a statement often made by Brimson Grow for whom Northern's library is named. Ted shared, "An investment in theological education has the most powerful impact on Christian ministry and Northern is grateful for this investment from the Francis family."
