Northern Chooses the Church

At its Annual Meeting on October 6, 2012 the Board of Trustees, after considerable research and upon consultation with the Deans, Faculty, and Cabinet, unanimously decided to retain The Association of Theological Schools (ATS) as it sole accrediting body. Since 1968, Northern Seminary has been accredited by The Association of Theological Schools, the premier national accrediting body for theological schools in the United States and Canada.  ATS is recognized by the US Department of Education as an approved accrediting agency.  Among other benefits, ATS accreditation status enables students to participate in federal Title IV financial aid programs.

In 2007, Northern successfully completed the normal 10-year accreditation review process with both The Association of Theological Schools (ATS) and The Higher Learning Commission (HLC).  While Northern is still fully accredited by, and in good standing with, both agencies, it has decided to maintain ATS as its sole accrediting body starting July 1, 2013. After that date, HLC will no longer be one of Northern’s accrediting bodies.

Dr. Alistair Brown, President of Northern Seminary, remarked, “This is a landmark decision by the Board of Trustees and one that shows our commitment to the work of the Church.  We are excited to move forward with ATS.”  Northern Seminary is developing a reputation of being an innovative, church-focused seminary that is equipping the church to change the world.  This decision is another step toward that vision.
