Born in Evanston, IL, Dr. Karen Walker-Freeburg was raised in an American Baptist family and a multi-cultural ABC-USA congregation in Chicago. The pastor who baptized her would later become President of Northern Seminary. Karen has three children: Lara, who is a Northern Seminary graduate serving as an associate minister in Berwyn, IL; Colleen, is a student at Northern's sister school, Judson College; and Mike, who is a high school senior.
Dr. Walker Freeburg's formal training includes Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degrees with a specialization in spiritual formation. Her thesis involved developing a small groups process at Northern Seminary for discipleship among young first-year seminarians who are American Baptists. She is an ordained ABC/USA minister who has served in local church ministry in adult education, youth education, and spiritual discipleship group development. Currently, She directs and teaches Northern's formation for Christian ministry program and supervises the intern experiences for the students. At Northern Seminary, she has developed a robust program for spiritual and ministerial formation. Karen is known for her energetic style of presentation, ability to communicate clearly and teach with empathy.
