President Brown Announces Departure

Lombard, Illinois – Northern Seminary President Alistair Brown, Ph.D., has announced that the 2015-2016 academic year will be his final year as Northern’s president. He is being granted a year of sabbatical leave, with his resignation taking effect at the end of the next academic year (June 2016).

In a message to the staff and faculty Dr. Brown shared,

“It’s with much sadness but also a sense of rightnessAlistair picture that I have submitted my resignation from the presidency of Northern to the trustees of Northern Seminary. By the time we leave, Alison [my wife] and I will have been with Northern for the largest part of eight years. Being President here has been one of the greatest privileges of my life. I am thankful to God that he called us, grateful for the colleagues with whom the work has been shared, and excited about all that lies ahead for the seminary.”

Dr. Brown began as President in September 2008, taking head-on many of the challenges brought on by the economic downturn. On behalf of the board, James Stellwagen, Chair of the Board of Trustees, had this to say regarding the President’s decision,

“President Brown has been an innovative leader for Northern.  Under his guidance, the Northern community has transitioned through these tough economic times with fresh approaches, creative solutions, and new programs. As Alistair enters his last year as president, Northern will begin to transition to its next era of excellence in seminary education.”

In his eight years at Northern Seminary, Dr. Brown has had a profound impact on the faculty, staff, and students. Dr. Karen Walker Freeburg, Chief Operating Officer and Vice President of Academic Affairs shares,

“When Alistair arrived on campus to serve as Northern’s tenth president, it was within a few weeks that we clearly understood why God had brought him here to serve in the development of leaders for Christ’s church. His wisdom regarding how to release gifts for leadership among the staff and Cabinet changed the face of Northern. Within two years you could see evidence of a team working at full capacity. Creativity, wisdom and joy became the marks of our life together. New program development and partnerships emerged which impacted not only Northern but informed other ATS schools.”

During his sabbatical year, Dr. Brown will continue to bless Northern as he fulfills significant speaking engagements and sees various projects through to fruition. Throughout this time, the Board of Trustees will begin the significant task of seeking the person of God’s choosing as the Eleventh President of Northern Seminary.

We invite all friends of the seminary to keep Dr. Alistair Brown and his wife Alison in their prayers, and also the trustees, faculty and staff of the seminary as they take Northern forward into the next chapter of God’s plan.
