Welcome to Rev. Dr. Tasha Vinson Brown
We are very pleased to formally announce that Rev. Dr. Tasha Vinson Brown has joined Northern Seminary as Assistant Dean and Director of Strengthening the Quality of Preaching Lilly Grant Program. As many noticed, she began work in early August, running a hard race toward preparing a momentous grant proposal for submission to the Lilly Endowment. This new grant program will build upon Northern’s leadership in the field of homiletics and the groundbreaking work of Dr. Michael Quicke. Over the next five years under Tasha’s leadership, the seminary will establish among other projects: an annual Preaching Forum, peer learning groups among Chicago preaching pastors, invest in the development of an emerging homiletician to join the seminary faculty, and create a preaching workbook to assist pastors in becoming a *New Kind of Preacher.
Tasha has been a significant member of the Northern Seminary community for fifteen years. She began her journey with Northern as a Master of Divinity student in the Fall of 1999, entering studies as one of the first Presidential Scholar award recipients funded by the Lilly Endowment. In response to the growth of the seminary’s Formation for Christian Ministry program, in Fall of 2012 Tasha began teaching for Northern as Adjunct Professor of Spiritual Formation.
Her earned degrees include the Bachelor of Arts degree in Human Resource Development, Master of Divinity, and Doctor of Ministry in Pastoral and Spiritual Care. She is Pastor of Galewood Community Church, Chicago, IL. For the past six years Tasha has managed the administration of two of the City of Chicago Department of Family Services’ largest grant funded programs (Head Start and the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) Child Care Assistance Program). She brings to Northern Seminary eight years of experience providing technical assistance and support to more than 200 city-funded service providers. The seminary is pleased to bring onto staff a leader with grant management experience beyond what was hoped for, commitment to the mission of the school, and strong faith!
Tasha is passionate about leadership development for people of faith. She is the founder and president of the Women’s Leadership Network, Inc. (TWLN, Inc.), an organization developed to strengthen the leadership skills of women in ministry, specifically and women in leadership. Her published work, “Why the Non-Acceptance of Female Clergy Is a Violent Act by the Church” in the African American Lectionary builds upon her doctoral work and thesis dissertation, “Navigating the Leadership Waters: Women in Ministry, the Need for Supportive Communities.”
Welcome to Northern Seminary, Tasha, as a full-time member of our Academic Staff!
