Urban Ministry

Responding to God’s call to Urban Ministry is exciting, rewarding—and challenging.

Northern Seminary understands that individuals preparing for ministry in a contemporary urban context are faced with unique challenges varying from addressing the complex needs of the community to developing culturally relevant ministries.

That’s why Northern offers an Urban Ministry emphasis designed to fit the specific interests and needs of individuals interested in exploring a call to urban ministry.

With its main campus just 20 miles from downtown Chicago, Northern Seminary presents students with the unique opportunity for experiential learning in the urban cultural context. Through visits to various sites throughout Chicago, the city becomes the learning laboratory in which students are inspired to develop practical, relevant ways to share Christ in context. Individuals pursuing the Urban Ministry emphasis benefit from Northern’s commitment to personal, holistic ministry training. From the availability of professors to engage in discussion and guide students in discerning their call, to the opportunity to connect with urban ministry practitioners already serving in the field, students experience a community that partners with them in their journey toward effective urban ministry.

Is this program for me?

The Urban Ministry emphasis is for: anyone interested in ministering in an urban cultural context, individuals who want to learn more about the unique issues encountered in the urban culture, and pastors or church leaders who want to gain specialized skill for ministry in the urban church.

The Urban Ministry Emphasis can be acquired by completing a combination of any five Urban Ministry electives as part of any of the following programs: Master of Divinity, Master of Arts in Christian Ministry, Master’s Specialization, and Graduate Certificate.

Examples of Urban Ministry Electives include: Toward a Theology of Urban Ministry, Issues in Cross-cultural Evangelism, Creative Preaching in Urban Ministry, Urban Ministry of the Church, and Urban Ministry: Immersion Experience.
