Lombard, Illinois – The Board of Trustees of Northern Seminary has announced that Rev. Dr. Karen Walker Freeburg (MDiv ’94, DMin ‘02) has been appointed interim president of the seminary, effective June 12, 2015.

Karen Walker FreeburgIn light of President Alistair Brown’s current sabbatical year and recent announcement of his resignation effective June 2016, the Board of Trustees looks forward to the wisdom and vision Dr. Walker Freeburg’s leadership will bring as the Board begins the search for Northern’s eleventh president throughout the next year.

“The seminary is blessed to have a VP the caliber of Dr. Walker Freeburg available to step into the role of interim president,” Northern Board Chair James Stellwagen said. “As Dr. Brown begins his sabbatical, the seminary is well staffed to continue moving forward with its many new initiatives and programs. Karen understands Northern and the essence of seminary education in the 21st century better than anyone I know, and the entire Board of Trustees has full confidence in her ability.”

Dr. Walker Freeburg notes, “I am incredibly proud of our faculty, board of trustees, and staff. There are three new, high impact academic programs launching within the next four months, and we are entering into a new phase of distance educational delivery with the development of synchronous learning classrooms. Every member of the Northern team has had a part in envisioning the powerful future Alistair, first, enabled us to pursue! Please join me in prayer for the seminary, the Brown family during their sabbatical year, and the presidential search committee as they begin their important task.”

Northern Seminary looks forward with eager anticipation to all God has for us as we continue on in our mission to equip the church to change the world.
