Impact Story: Dr. Sam Hamstra
The joy of teaching seminary is witnessing the fruit of your work as students become pastor-theologians in service of local congregations,” said Dr. Sam Hamstra, Affiliate Professor of Church History and Worship. Dr. Hamstra, whose avocation is semi-pro baseball, calls himself “a utility player” on Northern’s faculty roster.
“I teach church history, worship, pastoral theology, and practical ministry,” he noted. “Each academic year, I coach a couple of students as they write their Doctor of Ministry theses and I supervise one student internship. I am also providing direction for a new Master of Arts in Worship degree.” He has been teaching at Northern since 2007. When asked about what he’s valued most about the school, Dr. Hamstra responded, “At Northern Seminary, multi-ethnicity is not just a value, it is our reality, and I love it.”
In 2012, he founded ChapterNext (www.chapter-next.com), a pastor search and church consultancy. “That work, coupled with my service to Northern, provides a full and exciting life of service to Christ and His Church,” he said.
Dr. Hamstra and wife Debbie have been married for forty years. The pair are members of Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church. They have been blessed with four children, and have four grandchildren. He was recently inducted into the National Semi-Professional Baseball Hall of Fame.
We are blessed to have Dr. Hamstra with us!
