President’s November Newsletter

Dear Friends,

Northern students, alumni, and faculty view the Pandemic as an invitation to ministry. Like first responders, they run toward challenges and are designing and delivering innovative ministry. In this month’s newsletter, you’ll read about several people from Northern Seminary accepting positions, publishing books, and recording songs in the midst of a pandemic. They give us hope and direction as we minister through COVID-19.

The Pandemic has been a catalyst for Northern students and graduates accepting calls to pastor local churches. Rather than remaining stuck, these Northern seminarians are running toward a crisis and sharing the gospel in their communities. Read how these three students are leading the church and engaging our world.

Sessions with Exodus:  Questions God’s Children Ask by Dr. William D. Shiell, Professor of Pastoral Theology and Preaching

Dr. Shiell’s new book is a 13-session preaching and small group Bible study guide designed to help lead churches out of the plagues of today into God’s presence. Explore the book of Exodus from the questions that God’s children raise in Exodus, and discover creative insights for pastoral and marketplace Christian leaders as they navigate the pandemic.
Dr. Nijay Gupta’s New Releases

New Testament Professor and author, Dr. Nijay Gupta thrives on collaboration.  In fact, he and his friend John Goodrich recently co-edited Sin and Its Remedy in Paul.  One reviewer credited them, and their IBR research group, as having “spawned a miniature renaissance in the study of Pauline theology.”  This book is one of four recently published works from Nijay.

His dual role as scholar and teacher also creates a mutually beneficial dynamic at Northern.  Seminarians have the opportunity to read their professor’s pre-published writings and they provide him with feedback.  According to Nijay, “I process what I think about through writing. I’m thankful that I have a job where I can test out my ideas with students who are my target audience…I tailor my writing to courses I teach. Also published this year was The New Testament Commentary Guide.

Perspectives on Paul by Rev. Canon Dr. Scot McKnight, Professor of New Testament
Pauline studies are in an uproar of conflicting perspectives, and Perspectives on Paul brings five major scholars of Paul into one volume and gets them to talk to one another in a civil manner.

Music Resources from Jeremy Ellis
Jeremy Ellis is a worship leader originally from South Africa He just released two songs entitled “Those Nails” and “Write Upon my Heart.” They were recorded with a worship community in the UK.  He is also about to release a 2nd EP and project called, “A Beautiful Inheritance.”
