About the Certificate of Ministry from the Africa Pastoral Training Institute

In partnership with Lawndale Community Church and Christian Community Development of Africa, Northern Seminary offers a Certificate of Ministry in the Kibera slum of Kenya. Pastors from around Kenya and other parts of Africa travel to be trained in pastoral leadership and Christian community development.

History

In the summer of 2012, Dr. Wayne “Coach” Gordon, Affiliate Professor of Urban Ministry, led a group of students on an immersion experience in Africa.  As part of the course they visited the Kibera slums in Nairobi, Kenya, as well as pastors and church leaders in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.  While there, a group of pastors in the Kibera Slums asked Coach Gordon if he could help create a training program for pastors in Kibera.  Over the next year, the faculty and leadership of Northern worked together to create the Africa Pastoral Training Institute.

Graduates

Since the start of the Africa Pastoral Training Institute, 210 students have graduated from the program with a certificate from Northern Seminary (73 students in 2015 and 137 students in 2018).
