Faces of Northern: Meet Joshua Carney

May 24, 2023

Northern Seminary is comprised of people who are excited about what God is doing in the world today and who believe that Northern plays an important role in equipping and inspiring church leaders of today and tomorrow.  In this series, Faces of Northern, we invite you to learn more about those who make Northern what it is today. Here, we get to know Joshua Carney, Accounting Manager

What is your role at Northern and how long have you been here?

I am the Accounting Manager and I have been here for 1.5 years.

What is your favorite part of your job?

I appreciate interacting with the students and helping them understand the financial aspects of their degrees. I enjoy helping students discover solutions to their financial concerns about their degree program.

What is the best book you have read in the past year?

My name is Asher Lev by Chiam Potok

What is your go-to scripture verse?

John 11 and Jesus’s proclamation that He ”is the resurrection and the life.”

If you have a free day with no responsibilities, what would you fill that day with?

In honesty, I would sleep. But for a hobby, I would make furniture.

Who has impacted you the most, and why?

My mentor, Rev. Dr. Thomas Eden, a Northern grad. He was my vocal instructor through my undergrad, my pastor for life, and a dear friend.

If you were stuck on a deserted island, what three things would you want?

  • Coffee – because who wouldn’t
  • Twinkies – because we all need comfort
  • Something comfortable to sleep on – because I would likely just nap all the time

What’s your superpower – that thing that you think you are really good at?

I have a few: sarcasm and cynicism AND the ability to fall asleep while watching the same three minutes of a movie.
