Faces of Northern: Meet Phil Bailey

May 22, 2023

Northern Seminary is comprised of people who are excited about what God is doing in the world today and who believe that Northern plays an important role in equipping and inspiring church leaders of today and tomorrow.  In this series, Faces of Northern, we invite you to learn more about those who make Northern what it is today. Here, we get to know Phil Bailey, our Advancement Assistant.

Phil and his wife of 49 years, Jane.

What is your role at Northern and how long have you been here?

My role at Northern is providing administrative assistance to the Advancement leadership team. My service includes database upkeep, donation records, and assigned projects supporting Advancement initiatives. I have been at Northern for 4 1/2 years.

What is your favorite part of your job?

The part I treasure the most is seeing the blessing it brings to others when my efforts provide the desired results in a challenging situation.

What is the best book you have read in the past year?

In addition to the Bible, 5 Puritan Women: Portraits of Faith and Love By Jenny-Lyn de Klerk.

What are your go-to scripture verses?

1 Corinthians 4:5; Psalm 139; Psalm 119:89-93; 1 Peter 1:3-9

If you have a free day with no responsibilities, what would you fill that day with?

I’d have a family outing with my wife, Jane (who I have been married to for 49 years) and/or our grandkids.

Who has impacted you the most, and why?

My late pastor Rev Ivan H French (died Dec 2013) has always had the paramount impact on my life because of his personal friendship, pastoral care, and wise counsel.

If you were stuck on a deserted island, what three things would you want?

My Bible, a source of drinking water, and a satellite phone with speed dial to call for help!

What’s your superpower – that thing that you think you are really good at?

Responsibility! Because when something goes wrong, I am usually told that I was responsible for it!
