Getting to Know: Scott Austin
Northern Seminary, through its Master of Arts in Theology and Mission program, has partnered with The V3 Movement to provide V3 Learning Cohorts for church planters. Students who participate in two years of V3 Learning Cohorts are eligible to receive 9 credits with Northern Seminary. But who is behind these partnerships? Today we get to know Dr. Mike Moore, Director of the MA in Theology and Mission (MATM).
What do you do at Northern?
I am a recruiter for Northern and a Doctoral Student
What is your role with the MATM + V3 cohorts?
I coach the cohorts with other V3 coaches.
What excites you as you think of the church on mission today?
The Covid-19 pandemic shook many churches to their foundation. As those communities emerge they are asking really important questions like How do we engage our neighborhood? and How can we inspire the next generation of the church? I am excited about a missional resurgence among congregations.
What is the biggest challenge facing church leaders today?
The historic methods for ministry and church planting are not working in most parts of the world. We need a new imagination and new methods to join with God in the renewal of our neighborhoods. We formed the Northern + V3 Cohort for exactly this purpose: to form a new imagination for mission. V3 Movement coaches have critical competencies for missional church planting, and Northern Seminary’s MATM digs deep into the sources behind V3’s coaching tools.
What motivates you to continue to push the message of ongoing learning in the context of community?
We need to invite Christ followers into reproducible models for ministry. The best way to reproduce ministry is to seek direction in community and invite others to see what’s been successful.
Who are the V3 cohorts for, and why is joining one an invaluable experience for those who participate?
My immediate answer is our cohorts are for church planters looking for a new way. However, I think the opportunity is for more than traditional church planters. One future for church planters is to do the grassroots work of making disciples to plant churches. We coach disciplemaking first; church planting is an overflow. The cohort would be good for anyone who feels called to do a new thing centered in discipleship.
